Palm Beach residents are on edge after reports of an older man stealing packages from front porches in the area. A recent incident was caught on CCTV, showing the suspect brazenly taking a parcel from a home, raising concerns about a rise in opportunistic theft in this affluent part of the Gold Coast.

The footage shows an older white man, appearing disheveled and smoking a cigarette, approaching a house with multiple backpacks slung over his shoulders. The suspect can be seen reversing his bicycle, likely avoiding cameras and checking for any witnesses, before swiftly grabbing the package and riding away.

He scopes out the area and decides on what parcel he wants to take from the owners porch.

Residents speculate that his backpacks may contain other stolen items from nearby properties. The suspect's behaviour has led some to believe he may be under the influence of drugs, which could be impairing his judgment and driving his criminal actions.

He finds the parcel he wants and takes and scoops it off the ground.

Palm Beach, known for its high-end homes and desirable lifestyle, may be an attractive target for thieves seeking valuable deliveries left unattended on porches. With the increase in online shopping, porch piracy is becoming a common nuisance, especially in upscale neighbourhoods.

Local residents have expressed frustration, noting that such crimes often leave police with limited options due to the difficulty of tracking stolen goods and identifying culprits without concrete evidence.

He rides off with the package into the sunset, knowing he's gotten away with it, and no one can do anything about it.

This theft is just one example of the petty crimes that are leaving locals exasperated. One resident commented, "We work hard for what we have, and it's infuriating to see someone blatantly helping themselves to our property."

Another added, "This is the type of crime we’re all sick of. You feel violated, and it makes you question the safety of your own home."

With incidents like this on the rise, Palm Beach residents are being urged to take extra precautions to safeguard their deliveries:

  • Install Security Cameras: CCTV footage is a valuable tool for identifying and deterring porch thieves.
  • Use Secure Lockboxes: Consider investing in a lockbox or delivery safe for packages.
  • Schedule Deliveries Wisely: Arrange to be home for high-value deliveries or have them sent to a secure pickup point.
  • Stay Connected with Neighbours: Keep an eye on each other’s properties and report any suspicious activity.

While the police have yet to identify the suspect, they encourage residents to report any suspicious behaviour or share relevant CCTV footage to assist in ongoing investigations.
