Swimmers are being urged to avoid Currumbin Creek following a sewage leak caused by construction activity on the M1.

The spill occurred last night after a main sewer line along Duringan Street, Currumbin, was damaged during ongoing construction work. The leak allowed sewage to flow into the popular swimming spot.

City of Gold Coast officers have since repaired the damaged sewer line, but residents and visitors are being advised to stay out of the water until further notice.

“Although all site inspections carried out this morning suggest creek conditions appear normal, signage has been placed in the direct vicinity of the spill site, adjacent to the Currumbin RSL, while further testing is undertaken,” a Council spokesperson said.

“In an abundance of caution, the City recommends avoiding swimming in Currumbin Creek downstream from the spill site until test results are received tomorrow.

“We will keep the community updated.”

The Gold Coast Torch will provide further updates as new information becomes available. In the meantime, locals are encouraged to heed warnings and stay informed about public safety advisories.
